One hundred meters of cave to be widened to reach it, three teams of destructors of the Mountain Rescue at work. For Ottavia Piana it is the second accident in the same place, the Bueno Fonteno Abyss: in July 2023 she remained in the cave for 40 hours

The operations of the Alpine and Speleological Rescue could last days to be able to save Ottavia Piana, the 32-year-old speleologist who was trapped and injured in the Bueno Fonteno cave, in the province of Bergamo. A complex operation, they say from the Alpine Rescue, which has installed a telephone line through a cable about 3 kilometers long, thanks to which it is possible to communicate between the inside and the outside: ”Rescue could last several days”.

About a hundred rescuers are involved in the recovery of the woman, who was already trapped in July 2023 in the same cave. Yesterday, Piana fell 8 meters, suffering trauma to her legs, chest and face. The doctor and nurse who reached her in the cavity this morning checked her condition, which does not cause concern, but they are unable to bring her to the surface with the stretcher due to a rather narrow passage of a hundred meters. The Prefecture of Bergamo, which coordinates the rescue activity, had to authorize the Police Headquarters of the orobic capital to allow the firefighters to use micro explosive charges and widen the narrowest points of the cavity in the path between Ottavia Piana and the exit.

Around 5 p.m., a new team of rescuers entered the cave to relieve their colleagues who had been at work since this morning: in the bags the rescuers had two small oxygen cylinders, but also blankets and duvets in view of the cold of the night. The temperature in the cave has always been constant, around 8 degrees, but the humidity is high. At the same time, the firefighters installed headlights to illuminate the entrance to the cave.

The 32-year-old is part of the Cai Group of Lovere (Bergamo) andis involved in the ‘Sebino Project’, which has been involving, for several years, the mapping of this large natural cavity located between the northern part of Lake Iseo and Lake Endine, at an altitude of 585 meters. A network of caves, tunnels and underground galleries, for the most part still unexplored. Just as unexplored was, until yesterday, the point where the speleologist is.

A year ago trapped for 40 hours in the same cave
In 2023, the cave was the scene of the other accident. Piana was rescued after being stuck at a depth of 150 meters, with a fractured leg. Now he relives the same nightmare. Bueno Fonteno is a very large cave, discovered in 2006 and still being explored.
